Mural for Harvest Kitchen Restaurant

This past summer, I had the opportunity to paint a mural for the restaurant Harvest Kitchen, located in the Upper West Side of New York City. The project was organized by the Neighborhood Curbside Canvas Project, which connects artists to restaurants in NYC to bring more interest to restaurants affected by the pandemic, and at the same time, promote local artists.

The creative process for this mural started in late spring 2021, but the actual painting began on the Fourth of July Holiday weekend, and it was wrapped up at the beginning of October. The mural adds up to 1,340 SF and it is by far my largest painting!

When researching about the restaurant, I noticed that they value local produce and comfort food. Along with that, their physical space has lots of plants. With that in mind, I came up with the idea of painting American flowers, like pink and yellow echinaceas, to their Columbus Ave curbside patio.

What started as a sketch on paper was later transferred to the site with multiple visits to the restaurant.

Because the mural is exposed to the weather all year long, the paint had to be for an exterior purpose. In this case, I used Behr paint for exterior surfaces, and I can say that I was happy with their color options, and it is easy to apply.

Like my other paintings, I selected a single color for the background to contrast with the foreground flowers. For this mural, I picked up a purple paint to contrast with the flowers and their shades of green, yellow, pink, and brown.

If you are planning on hanging out in the Upper West Side, I highly recommend the restaurant Harvest Kitchen for brunch, lunch, or dinner. And, if you happen to go there, or walk around the area, I would love to see your photos on Instagram.

Hope you like the mural! Let me know your thoughts on the comments below.
