Summer in NYC: Things to do

Despite the heat waves we’re having this year in New York City, summer is still my favorite season. Being from Brazil, and now living in Brooklyn, this is for sure the kind of weather I’m used to. One of the reasons I enjoy summertime is that I take advantage of the extended daylight hours to spend more time in the studio making new paintings.

But, life is not all about work. To enjoy and relax in this wonderful season, I’ve been dedicating some time off with the family to go to parks, visit museums, and even take short trips. If you’re spending the summer in NYC, here are some tips on things to do in the city and around.

Brooklyn Bridge Park

If crossing the Brooklyn Bridge is on your list, then you must spend some time in the park right below it. Once you get there, the view of Manhattan will be waiting for you, as well as some restaurants in the area, and the park by the East River. Take some time there to appreciate the view and have some ice cream while exploring Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The High Line

There are not enough words to describe how beautiful The High Line park is during the summer. The wildflowers, the artworks, and the view is a singular experience. It’s worth visiting it despite a large number of visitors. We took the dogs there after visiting some art galleries in Chelsea, and I was surprised by the variety of wildflowers in the park. Definitely is a place to visit at any time of the year!

Dia : Beacon

If you’re up to a day trip and exploring art museums close to NYC, I got you covered. There are two places I visit whenever we have a chance, especially when we have family or friends over. One of them is Dia: Beacon, in Beacon, NY. Hop on a train, and get ready to appreciate their art collection from 1960 to the present. Their collection includes artworks by Michael Heizer, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Richard Serra, Louise Bourgeois, and many more.

Barnes Foundation

The second place I would recommend you to visit is the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, PA. They have a large collection of impressionist art, ranging from Matisse and Picasso to Van Gogh, Cézanne, Modigliani, and many more. They have so many artworks on display, that I can’t get enough of visiting the Barnes Foundation at least once a year.

As I mentioned earlier, studio time has been my focus for this summer. I recently finished a new painting collection, called Tropical, which is an ongoing series that I’ve been working on since 2019. Tropical is inspired by tropical plants, and it represents the boldness and richness of nature’s colors. To see the entire collection, click here.
