How to Buy Art Online

Is buying art online something you struggle with? I get it! With so many options these days on the internet, from Etsy to online galleries, to self-represented artists, it could feel daunting to choose and pick one piece of art that speaks to you. However, what if I said to you that buying art for your home or workspace, or either to gift somebody, could be a joyful process?

Here are 3 easy steps to get you started in buying art online:

Step 1 - Choose the artist

Buying art is a personal decision, what might touch you may not touch somebody else. And that is fine because we are all different with unique perspectives and tastes. To start the journey in finding your ideal piece of art, I recommend looking for artists - preferably local artists - on platforms like Instagram and Pinterest, and follow those whose work resonates with you. Let yourself fall in love with the art they make, get to know them, what inspires their work, and how is their creative process.

Step 2 - Choose the artwork

After you follow some artists on social media and get familiar with their work, is when you get to decide which piece of art you are going to bring home. Contact the artist, or visit their website to check what available works they have for sale. You could either buy an artwork that is currently available or if you would like something customized for a specific space you have you can ask if the artist takes commissions.

To help decide where the artwork is going to be placed, ask yourself:

  • How many empty walls do you currently have?

  • What is the available size of your wall?

  • What colors are you drawn to?

  • What colors do you already have in your place?

  • What subject matters do you feel more connected with?

If you are anything like me, you fall in love with a particular piece of art and buy it right away! Some of the art I collected was bought when I saw the piece, already loved the artist, and had some ideas in the back of my head of where I could put that new art.

Step 3 - Enjoy your new piece of art

After choosing the artist whose work you connect with, and the right piece of art for you, the final step is to enjoy it every day! Let this artwork - drawing/painting/sculpture - inspire you every time you look at it. Let it change and improve the environment where it is sitting, and even more, let it elevate the space as a whole, and touch all individuals that have the chance to be in contact with it.

Remember, art is more than a physical object. A piece of artwork helps us tell our story, and makes us feel in a certain way. We are worthy of being surrounded by art.

Bonus tip

When looking for the perfect spot to set up your new artwork, make sure to put it somewhere where you often look at. This could be the shelving unit, a picture ledge, or above the mantel.
